This painting is about a struggle that is currently going on in my life. I'm a college student plagued by fear of my own future and my school and work responsibilities have slipped in the past due to depression and sleep disorders. I see two paths I can take: the first would be failure; my problems overcome me, my fear gets the best of me, my personality stays weak and I drop out of school to pursue something I'll have to get used to. The second path is success and it's motivations that are buried deep inside me and give me hope every so often. I get these inspirations from viewing other artists work, creating something I am truly proud of, and even simple things like making someone smile or feeling appreciated. In this painting I have portrayed myself a little lost, unsure of my true identity. My body is painted with thick strokes of paint in contrast to the glaze style of the bed, and I am mostly black and white to signify my negative belief that I lack the outgoing personality of a successful person. I am standing on a very uncomfortable looking bed full of sores that are made from prescription labels. This is not a place that exists in the real world, only in my own mind where I must overcome this struggle.
